Do Kids Need To Supplement With Magnesium?

As parents of picky-eaters can attest: children may consume a lot of calories, but their diets typically lack a wide variety of foods.  Parents may not be quite as aware that their children’s diets typically do not meet all of their micronutrient needs as a result.

In fact, the standard western diet does not meet the RDA (recommended daily allowance) for magnesium.

A recent article published in the Open Heart, BMJ Journal stated: “A typical Western diet may provide enough magnesium to avoid frank magnesium deficiency, but it is unlikely to maintain high-normal magnesium levels and provide optimal risk reduction from coronary artery disease and osteoporosis… Various studies have shown that at least 300 mg magnesium must be supplemented to establish significantly increased serum magnesium concentrations….”

In short: most people need the addition of a daily magnesium supplement to lower their risk of developing numerous chronic diseases.  When it comes to children – whose bodies are growing, developing and paving new neurological pathways everyday – magnesium is an especially important part of overall health and wellbeing.

Magnesium Is Essential For Kids

Many parents know magnesium can offer sleep support for their kids, due to its calming effects on the nervous system. Studies have shown magnesium binds to and activates GABA receptors, which helps to reduce anxiety and decrease the breakdown of GABA in the brain,  thus leading to more stable GABA levels and better overall sleep.

But magnesium is essential for many functions beyond sleep!

Magnesium deficiency is one of the more common deficiencies seen in children and can lead to many physical and mental health concerns. We've highlighted a few below:

  • ADHD and magnesium: Magnesium deficiency is common in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,  and magnesium supplementation is shown to significantly improve both attention span and hyperactivity.
  • Skin health and magnesium: Serum magnesium and erythrocyte zinc levels have been shown to be lower in children with eczema.
Is Magnesium Safe for Children?

Yes, absolutely!

If your customers mention signs that show their child may have low magnesium levels, or if they struggle to get their children to eat magnesium-rich foods (dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes, etc.), a high-quality magnesium supplement is a good idea.

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and weakness. Extreme magnesium deficiency can cause numbness, tingling, muscle cramps, seizures, personality changes, and an abnormal heart rhythm.
